New Michigan bill would allow multi-state lottery winners to remain anonymous
By admin | | 0 Comments |

By Kate NorthropOn Thursday, a State Representative proposed new legislature that would allow Michigan winners of multi-state games like Mega Millions and Powerball to remain anonymous when claiming a prize.Only winners of local in-state Michigan games are currently allowed to remain anonymous, but a bill introduced by Rep. Pat Outman specifies that players who win multi-state games would be able to choose to remain anonymous as well.According to a press release, the intention of the bill is to protect players whose security is compromised after winning significant prizes from Mega Millions, Powerball, and Lucky for Life."This is all about providing safety and ensuring winners of these types of games do not receive unwanted, possibly dangerous attention," Outman explained. "The bill would allow those who win the lottery to have the choice to keep their identities anonymous. Allowing a privacy option gives people a more secure feeling and does not leave them open to harassment or a flood of requests for funds, loans or donations."The bill's timely introduction comes about a month after the ticket for a record-breaking $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot was sold in Novi, Michigan. The winner has not come forward to claim their prize yet, but perhaps they might want to wait to see the outcome. Mega Millions winners have one year from the draw date to claim their prize.Outman also argues that the rise of social media in the past decade may leave players more vulnerable to scams and solicitation since personal information about lottery winners is so easily accessible. He worries that current law permitting the names of winners be disclosed publicly and to the media could pose a threat to the winner and his or her family."Everyone who plays these types of lottery games hopes to win big, and if it happens, it should be a time of celebration, not distress," Outman said. "Several other states allow winners to remain anonymous, and, in my opinion, it's time Michigan allow this option as well."This is not the first time that similar legislation was examined. In 2016, Rep. Ray Franz introduced a bill that also advocated for player anonymity, which was eventually shot down. However, Outman hopes to kick off his first term in the Legislature on a positive note by bringing back the topic into discussion once more."Privacy and safety is key among my position as a State Representative," he added. "I want to keep my constituents safe; I want to make sure they maintain their privacy, and this is a way to ensure that." .

As both jackpots sit near the $400 million mark for the upcoming draws on Friday and Saturday, someone is going to be stepping into 2021 with wads full of cash and a massive celebration to match. The jackpots for the two games simultaneously swelled this high back in 2018, where they added up to nearly $1 billion. It was only the second time in history that two US lottery games combined to reach at least $800 million.Depending on whether someone scoops up either of the jackpots this weekend, it could be the third time. The Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots are also the first- and second-highest jackpots in the world right now, respectively. The third-largest jackpot in the world is Italy's SuperEnalotto jackpot valued at €84.9 million (US$104.41 million).Mega Millions began growing Sept. 18 as a $20 million jackpot and has rolled 30 times. Prior to a rule change brought on by slowing sales, jackpots used to start at $40 million. Before Tuesday's drawing, the Mega Millions jackpot sat at $376 million. Without a winner, the jackpot has rolled to $401 million for the next drawing on Fri., Jan. 1, 2021 at 11:00 pm EST with a cash value of $305.4 million.Meanwhile, the Powerball jackpot started growing Sept. 19 as a $20 million jackpot and has also rolled 30 times. Just like Mega Millions, the game had its $40 million starting jackpots reduced to $20 million as result of the coronavirus' impact on sales. Prior to the drawing on Wednesday, Powerball boasted an equally mouthwatering $363 million jackpot and has risen to $384 million with a $295.4 million cash value after no one won, which will be up for grabs on Sat., Jan. 2, 2021 at 10:59 pm EST.The cash values for the two jackpots are the real stars of the show, as they rank as the 18th- and 19th-largest US lottery jackpot cash values of all time. The annuity jackpots rank as 28th-largest in US lottery history for Mega Millions, while the upcoming Powerball annuity jackpot is the 33rd-largest of all time.See below for the top-25 rankings for both annuity and cash values. The last time the Mega Millions jackpot surpassed the $400 million mark was in June of this year, which was claimed by an anonymous couple from Glendale, Arizona. It was the largest payout to any Arizona Lottery player ever and was the 11th-largest Mega Millions jackpot in history. The Powerball jackpot last reached an amount this big back in January, when it climbed to $394 million and was finally won by Florida resident Sheryll Goedert. The cash value of $276.5 million was the 20th-largest lottery jackpot cash value ever claimed in the United States at the time it was won.Mega Millions and Powerball tickets are $2 per play and can be purchased at lottery retailers in 44 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. (Mega Millions is not offered in Puerto Rico.)Players looking for a nearby lottery retailer — or that out-of-the-way retailer with a smaller line — are encouraged to use Lottery Places, an app for iOS, Android, and Windows that can locate the nearest lottery retailers in every jurisdiction that sells Powerball and Mega Millions. The helpful app can locate lottery retailers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, much of Canada, and the Caribbean.Mega Millions players can multiply prizes with the Megaplier option for an additional $1 per play. In several (but not all) states, Mega Millions also offers a new optional $3 wager called Just the Jackpot that allows players to receive two entries for a chance to win the game's jackpot prize only.Powerball players can multiply prizes with the Power Play option for an additional $1 per play.Top 25 United States lottery jackpots of all timeThe following list actually shows the top 33 For the first time since 2018, the combined value of Powerball and Mega Millions is greater than $1 billion. Together, the two multi-state lottery games are offering a total of $1.15 billion in this week's drawings. The complete top-25 list of United States lottery jackpot annuity and cash values can be found below.Players looking to calculate what they would receive after the initial federal and state tax withholdings can find it all pre-calculated for each Powerball jurisdiction on the Jackpot Analysis page at USA Mega, a web site devoted to the Powerball and Mega Millions multi-state lottery games.  The Jackpot Analysis pages have recently been improved to also include the additional taxes that will be due after the initial withholdings, and will even allow players to see the taxes due under different filing statuses.Wednesday's mega boatload of cash is the result of 33 consecutive draws without a winner.  The run-up started as a $20 million prize on Sep. 19 — it has been nearly 4 months since Powerball last had a winner. The winning ticket for that $94.8 million jackpot was sold at the Tops Friendly Markets on Erie Road in Derby, New York. The last time Powerball produced a jackpot this large was in March of 2019, when one ticket sold in Wisconsin won a $768.4 million grand prize. It was claimed a month later by 24-year-old Manuel Franco of West Allis, Wisconsin.Players looking for a nearby lottery retailer — or that out-of-the-way retailer with a smaller line — are encouraged to use Lottery Places, the only app for iOS, Android, and Windows that can locate the nearest lottery retailers in every jurisdiction that sells Powerball and Mega Millions. The helpful app can locate lottery stores in the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, much of Canada, and the Caribbean.Michigan lottery players also have the option of bypassing the store completely and buying Powerball lottery tickets online. Some states offer direct online sales too.  Michigan residents can bypass the store completely and  buy Mega Millions tickets and    Powerball tickets  online.  Texas residents can buy Mega Millions tickets and Powerball tickets online too.  Oregon residents have options to buy  Mega Millions tickets and  Powerball tickets online as well.  Note that some of these links will only work properly for residents of the states mentioned.Players outside the USA can use a reputable butler service, which provides scanned copies of the purchased lottery tickets securely held on behalf of the customer. In the past, the lottery ticket service was used by people out side the USA to win big jackpots in Oregon and Florida.Players should note that jackpot amounts are conservative estimates provided by the lotteries, and are often somewhat higher by the time the drawing occurs. For example, the original estimate for Saturday's drawing was $470 million, but by the time all the proceeds were counted just before draw-time, the jackpot had swelled to $489.6 million. The winning numbers for Saturday, January 9, 2021 were 14, 26, 38, 45, and 46, with Powerball number 13.  The Power Play number was 2.Although nobody won the jackpot Saturday night, 2 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 1 from Florida and 1 from Pennsylvania.Neither of the second-prize tickets were purchased with the Power Play option, which would have doubled their prizes to $2 million. Power Play is available in all jurisdictions except California, where the fixed nature of the prize increase offered in Power Play is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payout regulations.68 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000.  Of those tickets, 18 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $100,000, and 4 were purchased in California where the prize was $37,117 this drawing.  California prize amounts differ from the rest of the country because the state awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level.A complete list of prizes available for matching various numbers, as well as the official drawing video, can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega. The prize payout chart can also be found on the Powerball Prize Payouts page at Lottery Post.Following the Saturday drawing, the Powerball annuity jackpot estimate was raised $60.4 million from its previous amount of $489.6 million. The cash value was raised by $33.6 million from its previous amount of $377.8 million. The next Powerball drawing will take place Wednesday night at 10:59 pm Eastern Time.Powerball is played in 45 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  Drawings are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time.  Tickets cost $2 each.Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega (www.usamega.com).  The USA Mega Web site provides lottery players in-depth information about the United States's two biggest multi-state lottery games, Mega Millions and Powerball.Top 25 United States lottery jackpots of all timeThe upcoming Powerball jackpot currently stands as the 13th-largest lottery jackpot of all time.  The amount of the jackpot may rise even further by the time the drawing takes place, as lotteries are typically conservative in their initial estimates.Powerball: $1.5864 billion, Jan. 13, 2016 (19 rollovers, starting $640 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot rolls again

The 34 consecutive drawings since the last winner on Sept. 16 is the longest stretch without a jackpot winner in the game's history. All those drawings have accumulated a massive pile of cash, ready to provide multi-generational wealth to the lucky lottery player who wins it all.Wednesday night when there were no Powerball jackpot winners, the new jackpot for Saturday's drawing was estimated at $640 million, with a lump-sum cash option of $478.7 million. Nearly a half-billion dollars in cash!It is the 8th-largest lottery jackpot in world history, and the 5th-largest cash option ever offered.Players should note that jackpot amounts are conservative estimates provided by the lotteries, and are often somewhat higher by the time the drawing occurs.  For example, the original estimate for Wednesday's drawing was $550 million, but by the time all the proceeds were counted just before draw-time, the jackpot had swelled to $556.7 million.Of course, any big winner (or winners) of Saturday's Powerball jackpot will have to pay taxes on their prize, so the website USA Mega has a handy Powerball Jackpot Analysis page available to calculate the federal and state taxes that would be withheld upon payout. The newly-improved feature calculates both the initial withholdings and the final tax burden due at the end of the year, and even can show taxes calculated for different IRS filing statuses.Players looking for a nearby lottery retailer — or that out-of-the-way retailer with a smaller line — are encouraged to use Lottery Places, the only app for iOS, Android, and Windows that can locate the nearest lottery retailers in every jurisdiction that sells Powerball and Mega Millions. The helpful app can locate lottery stores in the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, much of Canada, and the Caribbean. In the past, the lottery ticket service was used by people out side the USA to win big jackpots in Oregon and Florida. The winning numbers for Wednesday, January 13, 2021 were 4, 19, 23, 25, and 49, with Powerball number 14.  The Power Play number was 2.Even though nobody won the jackpot Wednesday, 11 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 2 from California, 1 from Colorado, 1 from Georgia, 3 from Michigan, 1 from New York, 2 from Texas, and 1 from Virginia.Only the player from Virginia purchased the Power Play option for an extra $1 per play, doubling their prize to $2 million.When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, a second-prize win is doubled and any other non-jackpot prize is multplied by the Power Play number drawn that evening. A full chart of payout amounts can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega, as well as on the Powerball Prize Payouts page at Lottery Post.Power Play is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered in Power Play is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts. By law, California awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level. But even though Power Play is not available in California, the two second-prize winners in the state will split the $5.5 million in prize money that has accumulated over the 22 drawings without a second-prize winner in the state. Each winning ticket will be awarded $2,768,497.Also in the Wednesday drawing, 83 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000.  Of those tickets, 12 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $100,000, and 7 of the tickets were sold in California, where the prize was worth $33,076 this drawing.Following the Wednesday drawing, the Powerball annuity jackpot estimate was raised $83.3 million from its previous amount of $556.7 million and the cash value was raised by $62.3 million from its previous amount of $416.4 million.The next Powerball drawing will take place Saturday night at 10:59 pm Eastern Time.Powerball is played in 45 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  Drawings are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time.  Tickets cost $2 each.Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega (www.usamega.com).  The USA Mega Web site provides lottery players in-depth information about the United States's two biggest multi-state lottery games, Mega Millions and Powerball.Top 25 United States lottery jackpots of all timeSaturday's Powerball jackpot $730 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot skyrockets

The ability to walk into a lottery retailer and purchase two separate opportunities to win more than a half-billion dollars in cash is unprecedented.Lottery players dreaming of what all that cash would look like in their bank account can get quite an accurate picture by visiting USA Mega's Powerball Jackpot Analysis and Mega Millions Jackpot Analysis pages. They present the after-tax cash and annuity prize amounts reported state-by-state, showing both the initial withholdings by the lottery as well as the final taxes due — and even lets you specify your IRS filing status.Players should note that jackpot amounts are conservative estimates provided by the lotteries, and are often somewhat higher by the time the drawing occurs.Wednesday's mammoth jackpot is the result of another Powerball record: 35 consecutive draws without a winner — the longest streak for the decades-old game. The run-up started as a $20 million prize on Sept. 19.The winning numbers for Saturday, January 16, 2021 were 14, 20, 39, 65, and 67, with Powerball number 2. The Power Play number was 3.Even though nobody won the jackpot Saturday, 16 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 2 from California, 1 from Florida, 1 from Georgia, 1 from Idaho, 1 from Illinois, 1 from Missouri, 1 from New Hampshire, 1 from New Mexico, 1 from New York, 1 from Ohio, 1 from Pennsylvania, 3 from Texas, and 1 from West Virginia. The two California second-prize winners each will receive $536,063, due to that state's law that requires all lottery payouts to be calculated with a pari-mutuel formula, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level. Since more than one player won second prize, the winners will split the $1,072,126 that was allotted in this drawing for the second prize level.Only two of the second-prize winners purchased the Power Play option — the tickets sold in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. Because those tickets were purchased with the Power Play option their second-prize wins are automatically doubled to $2 million. Power Play is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered in Power Play is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts.97 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000. Of those tickets, 15 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $150,000, and 9 of the tickets were sold in California, where the prize was worth $30,496 this drawing. In total, a staggering $47,707,913 will be awarded in prize money in this one Powerball drawing.A full listing of all payout amounts as well as the official drawing video can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega, as well as on the Powerball Prize Payouts page at Lottery Post.Following the Saturday drawing, the Powerball annuity jackpot estimate was raised $90.6 million from its previous amount of $639.4 million. The cash value was raised by $66.8 million from its previous amount of $478.2 million.The next Powerball drawing will take place Wednesday night at 10:59 pm Eastern Time.Players looking for a nearby lottery retailer — or that out-of-the-way retailer with a smaller line — are encouraged to use Lottery Places, the only app for iOS, Android, and Windows that can locate the nearest lottery retailers in every jurisdiction that sells Powerball and Mega Millions. The helpful app can locate lottery stores in the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, much of Canada, and the Caribbean. In the past, the lottery ticket service was used by people out side the USA to win big jackpots in Oregon and Florida.Powerball is played in 45 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Tickets cost $2 each.Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega (www.usamega.com). The USA Mega Web site provides lottery players in-depth information about the United States's two biggest multi-state lottery games, Mega Millions and Powerball.Top 25 United States lottery jackpots of all timeWednesday's Powerball jackpot currently stands as the 6th-largest lottery jackpot of all time in the United States, and the 4th-largest Powerball jackpot ever. Brisk sales will likely push the jackpot estimate higher by draw time.If nobody wins Wednesday, it's anyone's guess how high it will go.Powerball: $1.5864 billion, Jan. 13, 2016 (19 rollovers, The Power Play multiplier was 3. The top prize was adjusted upwards from the initial estimate of $730 million after all proceeds were counted Wednesday night. The lump sum payout for the single winning ticket is a jaw-dropping $546.8 million.The winning ticket was sold at Coney Market in Lonaconing, which is in Allegany County in the Northwest part of the state, bordering Pennsylvania. Coney Market will receive a $100,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the jackpot-winning ticket.Maryland lottery spokeswoman Carole Gentry said Wednesday night's Powerball win is by far the largest prize in the Maryland Lottery's history, easily outdistancing the $218.6 million share of a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot claimed anonymously by The Three Amigos in the March 30, 2012 drawing. The jackpot winner has the choice to take the $731.1 million paid in 30 graduated payments over 29 years or the $546.8 million lump sum payment. The annuity payments increase by 5% each year. All prize amounts are subject to federal and state tax, the results of which can be seen on the Powerball Jackpot Analysis page at USA Mega."Congratulations to our winners in the Powerball drawing," said Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director Gordon Medenica in a press release. "This is a truly exciting day for Maryland as we wait to see who will step forward to claim the jackpot!"Lottery winners in Maryland have the right to remain anonymous to claim the prize. Lottery claiming deadlines (typically 182 days) have been extended during Maryland's COVID-19 state of emergency. Any ticket that reaches its expiration date while the state of emergency remains in effect can still be redeemed for up to 30 days after the date that the state of emergency is lifted. The Powerball jackpot had grown since September, when a ticket sold in New York won a $94.8 million jackpot. That winning ticket was sold at Minogue's Beverage on Route 9 in Ballston Spa, and was claimed by a Malta man who received a one-time lump sum payment totaling $50,868,332 after required withholdings. The Jan. 20 drawing was the 36th since that last winner, making this the longest jackpot roll in Powerball history. The Powerball jackpot resets to its starting point of $20 million for Saturday's drawing. The odds of hitting Wednesday's grand prize was 1 in about 292 million. But Powerball says 1 in every 24.87 tickets wins a prize, starting at $4.Lottery players disappointed that they did not win all of that cash still have a prime opportunity to play for one of the biggest lottery jackpots of all time right now. The multi-state Mega Millions jackpot is currently approaching $1 billion, with a lump-sum cash option of $716.3 million.In the Wednesday Powerball drawing, 13 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 2 from California, 2 from Georgia, 2 from Illinois, 1 from Maine, 1 from Maryland, 1 from Michigan, 3 from New Jersey, and 1 from Oregon.Only one of the second-prize winners — in the apparently-lucky state of Maryland — purchased the Power Play option for an extra $1 per play, doubling their prize to $2 million.The two California winners will share the $1,199,278 second prize pool in the state, winning $599,639 each. By law, California awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level. If nobody wins the money allocated for a prize level, that money is carried over to the next drawing. Also in the Wednesday drawing, 122 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000. Of those tickets, 18 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $150,000, and 16 of the tickets were sold in California, where the prize was worth $19,188 this drawing. When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, a second-prize win is doubled and any other non-jackpot prize is multplied by the Power Play number drawn that evening.A full chart of payout amounts and the official drawing video can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega, as well as on the Powerball Prize Payouts page at Lottery Post.Power Play is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered in Power Play is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts. The next Powerball drawing will take place Saturday night at 10:59 pm Eastern Time.Powerball is played in 45 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Tickets cost $2 each.Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega (www.usamega.com). The USA Mega Web site provides lottery players in-depth information about the United States's two biggest multi-state lottery games, Mega Millions and Powerball.Top 25 United States lottery jackpots
